Writer Inspo
Are you a writer looking for a little inspiration? Or maybe you just want to know how I do things in case it sparks something for you! I’ve had a few of my readers ask me for details about my writing setup. I’ve had others ask me about my writing journey and for writing resources I’ve used on my journey to becoming a full-time, paid writer!
Well, the truth is, I didn’t start out with novels. I was originally a screenwriter (and still am, technically! As soon as I turned to books, companies and directors came out of the woodwork wanting to work with me!). I lived in Los Angeles for many years, writing for some pretty A-list names. But ultimately, I wanted more control over the stories I told, as well as more time to travel and enjoy a personal life. Plus, IP is queen in the screenwriting business, and that’s what novels are. The fact that I now get to write both scripts and novels is a dream come true! Writing was, is, and will always be the activity/passion/calling I love most in this world.
So, here are the resources and tools I use to help me as a writer. Some are books, others are tech, and others are just little things I’ve picked up along they way. They might not work for you, but that’s where my first piece of advice comes in.
YOU and YOU ALONE know what works for your creative soul. It’s part of each of our journeys to figure out the patterns, habits, and tricks that cultivate creativity for us.
For example, I am an early morning and late night writer. Don’t even try to get me to write anything at 3pm — I can’t do it! I don’t want to. I’ll be napping and/or nature walking and/or re-charging my imagination by reading or going to theme parks or hanging out with friends. It took me a long time to figure out my pattern, but once I did, I accommodated it to great results. You might only want to write at 3 a.m. or from 9-3 while your kids are at school — that’s great! So long as you write in the way that’s healthy for you, you’re crushing it.
These are the four books that changed how I wrote in the most demonstrable ways and I hope they’re useful for you too!
WRITING BOOKS
TOOLS
Aside from splurging on a powerful laptop with one of my first paychecks, I’m a pretty low-maintenance writer! I keep a notebook and pen on me to jot down ideas, I use post its to outline my stories, and I write them on my computer! That way, I can write pretty much anywhere at any time.
